Meet the buyer event

The Yarpa NSW Indigenous Business and Employment Hub (Yarpa Hub), alongside Western Sydney Business Connection, hosted the first Meet the Buyer event  on the 29th of October at the Penrith Panthers club in Western Sydney as part of Indigenous Business Month.

Forty Indigenous businesses and fifteen corporate and government organisations gathered to network and build long lasting professional relationships.

Indigenous businesses who attended were strategically matched with large organisations such as Transport NSW, Lendlease and Sydney Zoo to showcase their products and services.

Each business was given 15 minutes with each buyer to promote their services and capabilities with the aim of securing a longer term relationship that would in turn lead to future opportunities.

Owner of Goanna Solutions, Corey Brown says he hoped he could show buyers how unique his company was.

“I really want to genuinely impress all of them to show this is what we are here for,” he said.

“We are a genuine Indigenous business in the IT sector but we are quite relatively new, so it is quite hard being this new as a company. This is huge for Goanna,” he said. “It’s around networking and exposing who Goanna is.”

NSW Aboriginal Land Council CEO, James Christian spoke at the event about the significance of the day.

“Today’s meet the buyer event is the first of what will be many strategic matching events to be hosted by the Yarpa Hub and the Western Sydney business Connection,” he said.

“We know that over the past two decades we’ve seen an unprecedented cultural shift on behalf of Australia’s largest companies when it comes to rights and aspirations of Aboriginal people in this country. That’s why the hub will be this one stop shop for industry and employers wishing to hire Aboriginal people or engage Aboriginal businesses in the supply chain.”

Feedback from the event was extremely positive with a number of businesses on the day confirming that they are already in negotiations with buyers for various pieces of work.
